Islanders Move Up to Division II

2010-07-22

Exciting News for MHS Hockey

The Rhode Island Interscholastic League (RIIL) has moved the Middletown High School Hockey team from Division III to Division II as part of its four year realignment.  With support from the school and coaches, Athletic Director Eric Godin lobbied for the promotion.  Division III has been the largest divsion in the state for many years but in the realignment, Division II becomes the largest division and this influenced the decision.  More importantly is the quality and quantity of the players coming out of the Jr High and NCYHA programs and into MHS over the last four years and the expectation for the numbers to continue.

Division II will have 15 teams split between three sub-divisions.  Middletown will play in D-II South with defending D-II champion Portsmouth, Narragansett, South Kingstown, and Rogers/Tiverton.  The opportunity to play both our island rivals twice during the regular season is also something to anticipate.  The Islanders will play each team in their subdivision twice, and play each of the teams in D-II North and Central once.

Each game in D-II will be a challenge and we are confident that our players will meet that challenge.
